Finding your Optimal Posture

So, how do you find your optimal posture?

The key is the “triple S” prescription. Triple S = Skull, Shoulder blades, Sacrum

First identify those three spots. Your skull the rounded curve on the back of your head. Your shoulder blades on your upper back. Your sacrum is the only one that you may not have heard of, it is the fused part of your low spine, right above the tailbone. Now that we have the anatomy clear, check out my instagram for a video if needed & there is always google :) Go to a wall and begin to align your sacrum, shoulders, and skull against the wall. You will likely need to walk your feet away a little and have a softness in the knees. The sacrum is where we tend to tilt- so work to get this in place first by lengthening the tailbone toward the earth and lifting the pubic bone up toward the ribs. You can use a “diamond” shape for reference here as well. Place your palms on your hip points, the pointer and second finger will go toward the pubic bone while the thumbs will come toward the navel. Creating this diamond shape with your hands energetically draw that space together and back, think about a drawstring. Now that the sacrum is in place. Lift up in the waist and draw the shoulder blades onto the wall. Moving up further lengthen the back of the neck so the rounded part of the skull is touching the wall. Now, close your eyes and take 5-10 deep breaths here. This is how you want to hold the upper body. No, not all day, but in your yoga practice- YES. By working on this daily your breathing capacity will improve and your movements will improve as well. This is a win win situation so try it a few times a day, when you are sitting in your car in traffic, or in the kitchen waiting on something to simmer. Give it a try and see how you feel. You will begin to notice your posture. And that awareness is all you need to start improving your postural habits. So, go do it now!
